The Systematic Literature Review of The Integration of Lean Six Sigma and Industry 4.0 in Achieving Operational Excellence in the Electronic Manufacture Servicing (EMS)
Abstract
Globalization, the high pace of technological development, the reduction of product life cycles, and the increased customer demand have made manufacturing organizations work in complex and competitive business environments. The global supply chains have compounded competition pressure thus forcing manufacturers to produce high quality products at reduced costs and timely react to the market changes. Meanwhile, rapid technological development has caused the speed of introduction of new products and process technologies to rise, shortening the life cycles of the product, and escalating the number of changes in production. Such dynamics have been forcing manufacturing organizations to keep on improving operational efficiency and product quality, flexibility, and responsiveness as well as remain cost competitive. In such wider manufacturing environment, the Electronics Manufacturing Services (EMS) organizations are subjected to especially challenging operational environments. EMS industries are marked by high product mix, dynamic engineering design modifications, and unstable customer demand due to the rapid technological obsolescence in the electronic produce. Compared to the traditional mass production environment, EMS manufacturers must deal with a multi-stage assembly of various variants of products, and even within a single production line. Moreover, there are strict regulation requirements, quality standards, and customer-specifications that further compound the operations. Such challenges require well-organized but flexible strategies of improvement that can help face variability, guarantee the consistency of quality, and respond quickly to the changing production needs.
